Job Description

Court Clerk Position

As a Court Clerk with the City of Durango, you'll help keep Municipal Court operations organized while serving as a helpful resource for people navigating the court process. You'll assist with court cases and records, prepare documents, accept payments, answer questions about court procedures, and support court proceedings. This position is a great opportunity to gain experience in municipal government, learn how the court system works, and build a foundation for a future career in government or public service. Along the way, you'll work with community members, court staff, attorneys, law enforcement, and others involved in the court process while developing experience in administrative and legal operations. This is a part-time position working 27 hours per week, Tuesday through Friday.

The City of Durango is a purpose-driven organization with more than 400 full-time and 300 part-time and seasonal employees across 15 departments, all working together to provide a wide range of services that keep our community running every day. From public safety and utilities to parks and recreation, our team is dedicated to delivering high-quality services that enhance the lives of all who live, work, and visit here. At the city, we focus on continually improving how we work and serve the community. This effort is called the Trail to Excellence (T2E), and every employee plays a part in it. Whether you work outdoors, in an office, or lead a team, your daily efforts connect to the city's mission of providing excellent service and reaching the city's vision of being a multigenerational community that is authentic, diverse, engaged, thriving, and environmentally responsible. The full details of this vision are outlined in the city's strategic plan. As a member of our team, your work will be meaningful because:

  • Your ideas help shape citywide improvements.
  • The work you do ties directly into measurable goals.
  • You'll be part of a system that values collaboration, innovation, and results.

We're looking for team members who share our core values of teamwork, dependability, professionalism, service, respect, innovation, and wellbeing — and who are excited to make a difference in the community we serve.

What You'll Do in This Role:

  • Assist community members, attorneys, law enforcement, and others in person, by phone, and through written communication.
  • Help people understand court procedures and next steps without providing legal advice.
  • Process citations, court cases, records, and other documents while keeping information accurate, organized, and confidential.
  • Prepare materials for court sessions and assist the Court Administrator and Municipal Court Judge with day-to-day court operations.
  • Serve as courtroom clerk during proceedings, helping process cases, prepare documents, record hearings, and maintain records of court activity.
  • Accept and process fines, fees, restitution, and bonds, and assist with daily financial records and reconciliation.
  • Learn to use court and criminal justice information systems while following requirements for accessing and protecting confidential information.
  • Assist with jury trial preparation and provide administrative support to the Court Administrator and Municipal Court Judge.
  • Support City Clerk's Office operations and cross-train with coworkers to provide coverage when needed.

You Have:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least two years of administrative support experience, or a combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge and skills needed for the position.

You Will Succeed in This Role If You:

  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with people who may have different levels of familiarity with court processes.
  • Stay organized while balancing different tasks, deadlines, and priorities.
  • Handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
  • Work well independently while building positive working relationships with coworkers, judges, attorneys, law enforcement, and community members.

What We Can Offer You:

  • Free pass to the Durango Community Recreation Center and Chapman Hill Ice Rink and Ski Area
  • Free Transit pass
  • Eligibility to participate in the City's Annual Wellness Challenge and a chance to receive prizes and cash rewards
